He has a brother, Orin, and a sister, Sandra. Bolton was the youngest of three children. His parents divorced when he was young and he lost his father when he was 13 years old. His grandparents on both sides were Russian Jewish immigrants. Michael Bolton has sold over 65 million albums and singles worldwide.

Bolton originally performed in the hard rock and heavy metal genres from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, both on his early solo albums and those he recorded as the frontman of the band Blackjack. He is better known for his series of pop rock ballads recorded after a stylistic shift in the late 1980s.

In the music world, Bolton began recording in 1975 at The Church Studios in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It was the first album to be self-titled using his original family name of Bolotin. Bolton focused on hard rock early in his musical career, with his band Blackjack once opened to heavy metal artist Ozzy Osbourne on tour. It was rumored that in 1983 Bolton auditioned for lead vocals with Osbourne’s former band, Black Sabbath, but was rejected. Bolton later stated that this was untrue, “The rumor that I auditioned for Black Sabbath was just a rumour, I don’t know how on earth it started.”

As a vocalist, Bolton has performed with other artists including Lucia Alberti, Patti LaBelle, Jose Carreras, Tony Cetinsky, Ray Charles, Celine Dion, Placido Domingo, Renee Fleming, Winona Judd, BB King, The Lonely Island, Luciano Pavarotti, Percy Sledge, and Zucchero. And as a songwriter, he has written and collaborated on several songs for other artists as well.

Michael Bolton’s first hit was the song “How Am I Spoken to Live Without You”. He co-wrote this song with Laura Branigan. His early hard-rock albums were not liked by the audience. However, he continued, and with his fifth album Hunger, a soft-rock ballad, he took the music industry by storm.
